March 1, 2012

Dear Parents,

On the first day of the month that later delivers the first day of spring, we are enjoying the first measurable snowfall! I hope you all are having a fun, relaxing snow day. Yesterday the children’s final story drafts were posted for each other to enjoy during daily reading sessions. As one third grader pronounced, after hearing the final two stories read by their authors, “ I love all of our tales!” On Friday the third and fourth graders will meet for a special time to share and celebrate their respective original stories. Also tomorrow, with our combined classes, Emily and I hope to have a lovely ski through the fields of our school grounds.

Looking ahead: On Wednesday everyone received a Reading Challenge contract. I told the children that they may include SSR time in their plan in addition to the thirty minute daily reading at home. I will include copies of contracts to be kept at school to help third graders maintain a record.

Each child is bringing home, on Friday, a packet of multiplication/division fact family flash cards. Please help your third grader practice and learn the facts during this two week break. A 10-15 minute daily review will make a tremendous difference in your child’s confidence and facility with upcoming calculations following vacation. Thank you for your support.

Trips: March 20, Tuesday-Leave TGS at 10:30, Visit Thompson House. Many thanks to Alyson, Michelle, and Ray for driving. We will decorate vases and bring cut flowers for spring centerpieces in a Thompson House dining room.

March 22, Thursday-Leave TGS at 8:45 via bus to Brattleboro to performance of Windham Orchestra’s children’s concert at Latchis Theater, 9:30.

I wish you all a fantastic vacation!

Best,
Linda
