 May 24, 2012
Dear Parents,
Soon Michelle will contact you regarding our sleepover Wednesday night (June 13). The children will leave school that day as usual and return at 6:00. We will set up a campfire, tents and sleeping bags, etc. and enjoy dinner together, have a very long evening recess, make S’Mores, play flashlight tag, and then have songs and stories* by the campfire. All will be followed by a nice long night of peaceful sleep!!!!! (I am an optimist.) (The school will be open for us to use the bathrooms. If weather requires us to be inside, we will sleep in the classroom and play games there and in the gym.)
On Thursday, June 14, after breakfast clean-up, we will have a very early recess and then do a bit more end-of-the-year clean-up in the classroom. At about 9:00/9:30- ish I am hoping we will enjoy a hike and some time in water, weather permitting, but these plans are still in the making. If you have any suggestions for the latter (keeping in mind that there likely will be very sleep-deprived third graders), please pass them on to me. Regardless of what we do, WE WILL BE AT TGS AT ABOUT 1:30.
Below is a list of items suggested for our Wednesday/Thursday activities. I will make a request of the children to do as much of their own packing as possible-hopefully that is 100%.
Finally, please remember that families are welcome to join us at any time and that parents are NOT required nor expected to come. (I do ask that siblings be accompanied by a parent.) I do realize this is a very busy time of year and it just isn’t possible to do it all. I love this evening as it gives us all a chance to be our best in each other’s company. We will spend time in the classroom discussing just what that looks like and how each of us will contribute to everyone having a fun time.
Thank you all!
Linda

May 20, 2012

Dear Parents,

Friday was a fun day for all of us here at TGS. Grandfriends arrived at our third grade doorstep to be cheerfully greeted by your children. Our guests were kept busy during their morning visit in the classroom: a student led tour of work on display, a sharing of original written pieces, a math game, and a homonym puzzler. Generous with their praise, sincere listening, and laughter, our visitors made sure all the third graders enjoyed some special attention. It was a nice way to begin the day.

TIME ON THE STAGE:
Our Spring Concert is on Thursday, May 24,6:30. Alli asks that the students,WITH RECORDERS, meet me in the classroom by 6:10 so that they may be ready for warm-ups. Also please help your child remember to practice the recorder music for the concert!

Wednesday, May 30, 2: 15: Pepi and the Secret Names performed by Third Grade THIS WEEK I WILL SEND HOME A REQUEST FOR CERTAIN ITEMS NEEDED FOR COSTUMES. WE ARE NEARLY ALL SET. I DO ASK THAT EACH THIRD GRADER BRING TO SCHOOL ASAP A CLOTH/CANVAS BAG, GROCERY SIZE OR BIGGER, FOR HIS/HER PLAY PROPS & COSTUMES. I will bring extras if you don’t have one. Thank you.

WANTED ASAP: A CAMOUFLAGE SHIRT (with or without sleeves) AND PANTS FOR SAM, LARGE SNAKE (PRETEND PLEASE), stuffed animal or rubber/plastic one will do. Also, Lyle Crocodile is in need of a SPIKY GREEN TAIL if you have one just lying around the house. Thank you!!!!

FIELD TRIPS:

Friday, May 25: We head to Hooper Institute for a pond study field trip. We leave TGS at 10:00. (NOTE: This is later than originally stated because will need time on the stage at 8:30 that morning to rehearse our play prior to the trip.)

WE NEED DRIVERS! Ray and I are all set to drive, so we need ONE MORE VOLUNTEER FOR Friday, May 25. Please let me or Michelle know if you are able to help with transportation.

Thursday, May 31: 19th century schoolhouse in Deerfield, Ma. We are all set for transportation. Thank you Ray, Michelle, and Karen! (We leave TGS at 9:00 and return at about 2:00)

Tuesday, June 12: Final visit to Thompson House. Michelle has volunteered to drive, but we still need one or two more volunteers.

Final note: Our third grade sleepover/campout takes place the evening of Wednesday, June 13. By the end of the week a letter will be sent to you with more details. It is a time of celebration, so please know I keep it very simple because I also know everyone is so busy. I appreciate all that you have done this year to support the third grade program. From providing healthy lunches and snacks, coaching running, soccer, homework, etc., drilling the multiplication facts (that you must be tired of hearing about in parent letters), transportation to field trips, and the “sideline cheering” for and encouragement of your child. It has made a huge difference in the course of this rapidly concluding school year. Because I know how fast these next four weeks will go I want to make sure to say, “thank you.”

Gratefully,
Linda

May 13, 2012

Dear Parents,

“SERENE” will be the vocabulary word for the week, and an important ideal as we embark on the busy final weeks of the school year.

This past week third and fourth graders continued to meet in mixed groups to work on different projects for our unit on ancient Egypt. Emily led students through the beginning stages of a new research endeavor that included selecting a topic and creating a “mini-book.” The students working with me finished the final stages of their mummy masks. This week we will complete a related science experiment; the mummification of a zucchini, comparing the drying effectiveness of different substances.
Egyptian artifacts was the theme of poems started last Thursday, Final revisions will be made this week. For the duration of the year writing projects will be relatively short creative pieces and emphasize the children’s application of literary and organizational tools as well as writing mechanics. Charcoal drawings of trumpets, listening to both the music of Louis Armstrong and the recorded ko-hohs of trumpeter swans will accompany our reading of E.B. White’s The Trumpeter Swan.
In math, the children have been doing computational work involving division with single and two-digit numbers, with and without remainders, and applying the latter to solve written number stories. Facility with such challenging calculations is greatly increased for those children that can readily recognize multiplication/division fact families. Thank you for supporting your child’s facts mastery.
We are making steady progress learning lines, cues, and adding dramatic embellishments (what a bunch of hams!). Pepi and the Secret Names will take place on Wednesday, May 30, during all school meeting (2:15, maybe a bit later).

Thank you Jill, Kathleen, and Zach for volunteering to drive on Tuesday, May 15 for our visit to Thompson House. We will depart at 10:30 and return for our noon lunch, and an afternoon presentation by two Maasai visitors.

I look forward to Friday’s Grandfriend’s Day. It is such a joyful morning here at school and one of my favorite events during the academic year.
Have a wonderful week, and feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Linda

It's May!

May 5, 2012

Dear Parents,

It is May and the days are flying! Early in the week Collin led the third graders in a fun felting project, that will become six colorful additions (lovely coasters) to the class auction item. Also, we have begun to practice our play, an Egyptian folk tale, “Pepi and the Secret Names.” On Thursday and Friday, the third and fourth graders worked on plaster mummy masks. Their craftsmanship in making the mask forms and their caring thoughtful approach as partners in the process was a wonderful experience to observe for Emily and me.
CALAMITY MAN, THE GIANT FRED, TURKA AND THE LASSO, FLICK, WENDY AND THE ICEBERG are just a few of the titles of current original stories posted on our bulletin board. These tall tales have become the new favorite SSR choice! The ones remaining are very close to completion and soon will be posted for sharing. Our next writing projects will involve poems inspired by Egypt artifacts, and creative stories based on posters of Harris Burdick illustrations. The latter will be an opportunity for the students to apply their best organizational and literary tools to an independent writing. This week we began our final literature unit of the school year, The Trumpet of the Swan, by E.B. White. This novel will later lead us to do some exploration of local aquatic habitats.
In math we are halfway through a unit that emphasizes problems involving the multiplication of 2- and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number. This work will soon extend to the children solving division problems with multi-digit quotients. Thank you for continuing the facts practice! More than ever, the mastery of these is key to your child’s ease with current and future math calculations.
Important dates for third grade:
May 15 (Tuesday): The Thompson House*
May 25 (Friday): A pond study field trip,Hooper Institute, Walpole,leaving TGS 8:30,returning 1:00 *
May 30, (Wednesday, All School Meeting)- 2:15, OUR PLAY, “Pepi and the Secret Names” I will let you know of dress rehearsal times if you need more options to see our play.
May 31, Thursday: Deerfield Historical Village-Schoolhouse, a trip with the second grade, leaving around 9:00 *
June 12 (Tuesday): The Thompson House*
June 13 (Wednesday): Annual Third Grade Camp-Out at TGS (more details coming later)
*These trips need parent drivers. Please let Michelle know if you would like to help with transportation.
Have a wonderful weekend! Thank you for your support, and please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Linda

We head to Boston!

~OUR TRIP TO BOSTON’S MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS!~

Dear Parents of Third and Fourth Graders,

We have been busy during these early days of our shared Ancient Egypt unit. We are beginning more focused references to the MFA exhibit and to discuss the specifics of this trip.
This letter is a repeat of the one sent home two weeks earlier. Thanks!

WHEN? April 26,Thursday- WE REQUEST THAT THIRD AND FOURTH GRADERS ARRIVE AT TGS BY 7:30 SO WE CAN BE ON OUR WAY AT 7:45. THANK YOU!!!

HOW? BY TGS SCHOOL BUS
Please note that we will leave TGS by 7:45 a.m. and return to TGS by 5:00p.m.

While the Boston trip is an important part of our studies about this ancient culture, it also is an important time for us to be together as a whole group. Granted favorable weather and traffic conditions, we hope to have one or two opportunities in the park (across the street from the museum) for outdoor games and a picnic lunch.

There will be no trips to the shop and no need to send money. We do request that electronic games/devices be left at home. Travel games, drawing supplies, and books are encouraged.

Please make sure your child has ample beverages and food for the long day of travel (morning and afternoon snacks as well as lunch).

In split groups students will tour the gallery’s Ancient Egypt exhibit rooms and complete a set of questions, as well as a sketch of an artifact of choice toward the end of their visit. We have begun to prepare the children with our expectations for all aspects of this day.

We are excited about heading to Boston together. It has traditionally been a positive experience for all, and we expect that this year it will be a great day of traveling and learning together!

Sincerely,
Emily and Linda

A home note from Linda

April 16, 2012

Dear Parents,
Daffodils are in bloom! There are other markers of time too.
Drafts of tall tales are nearing completion as final revisions are underway for nearly all the third graders’ stories. Their ease with transitioning between events in their compositions and with developing vivid descriptions is one of the many reminders that the final term of this academic year has arrived. As always at TGS this time of year, we are heading into the busy weeks of spring- Grandfriend’s Day, Boston field trip, G.E.T. fundraising project,7-8 Musical, Spring Concert to name a few. The long list is filled with fun, worthwhile activities and celebrations.
The children have spent time working with fractions as equal parts of a whole item or of a set of items. They have practiced using “Fraction Burgers,” counters, fraction cards, and division facts to compare fractions with unlike denominators and to generate equivalent fractions. We will spend time this week reviewing some of this fraction work as we also begin a math unit that emphasizes multiplication and division facts and their extensions. It is my hope that every third grader will master the basic facts by June, but I will need your support. PLEASE practice with your child every day for at least 10 minutes to help us reach this goal. Thank you.
The children continue to read books by Vermont author Natalie Kinsey-Warnock, and to complete written comparisons. Also, this week we will return to short folk tales in the Great Books series, reading “The Green Man” (in honor of Earth Day).
In science, partners recently set up movable and fixed pulley systems as well as drive belt & wheel units to achieve assigned results (change of direction, speed and distance of movement/lift of a load). This week our simple machine work will be devoted to the exploration of levers.
We are enjoying time with fourth graders in our studies of Ancient Egypt. Salt and flour maps will be painted this week. Groups will travel between the classrooms in the next two weeks to work on amulets and tomb paintings. Preparation for our April 26th field trip to Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts will be ongoing between now and then.
WE ARE OFF TO THOMPSON HOUSE ON TUESDAY. THANK YOU RAY, LAURA, AND MICHELLE FOR DRIVING! Wanted: any small crafts items to help us decorate whimsical spring bonnets. Should you have some fun materials sitting idle at home, we would appreciate putting them to good use during our Tuesday visit. THANKS!
The children are so industrious. They are making steady progress in our third grade fundraising for G.E.T. The class voted for the lofty goal of $150 dollars and we are tracking our path to reach the top! Again, many thanks for all of your support at home.
CABBAGES GALORE-: Just being third graders gives them the opportunity to grow a giant cabbage! Even if you choose not to participate in the contest, growing one of these plants can reap VERY LARGE results. I am handing out cabbage plants with flyer/instructions for each child in the class.
FYI: William has arranged for an ART FIELD TRIP to third graders’ art museum experiences. On the afternoon of NEXT FRIDAY, 4.27.12. we will travel by school bus to Brattleboro’s art museum. This trip will be a perfect match for EARTH DAY as its theme is based on forms in the natural world.
The use of Frisbees in PSD has been fun. Catching, throwing, passing, and team games, e.g.“ZONE FRISBEE,” are some of the activities third and fourth graders have been participating in during recent classes.

I hope you have a wonderful week. I look forward to our conference on Friday afternoon.

Sincerely,
Linda

~OUR TRIP TO BOSTON’S MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS!~

Dear Parents of Third and Fourth Graders,

We have enjoyed planning and preparing for our shared unit on Ancient Egypt. We start this week introducing the concept of archeology/Egyptology and giving the children time with the wonderful resources available in our classroom and school libraries. We think it will be an exciting and very full unit: scientific method (mummification of zucchini slices), virtual tours of various museums’ Egypt exhibits, research (e.g. creating research booklets, classification of relevant facts), art projects (e.g. tomb paintings and mask making), salt and flour relief maps of the region, Egyptian writing activities, folk literature from this culture, pyramids activities, etc. This letter pertains to a field trip that plays a key role in our Ancient Egypt studies.
